LJANELLE is a visual artist from Third Ward in Houston, Texas. She draws greatly upon self-identity, self-discovery, and black womanhood to expand her work. The legacy and stories of women in her life permeates throughout her creations with oil painting being her most prominent medium. Currently, she aims to incorporate materials like fabric, plastic, and found objects pieces. Influences from various masks and textile techniques including Southern Black American, Yoruba, Ivorian, Japanese, and Indigenous American are paramount reference points. In addition to the past, present memories cultivated with her peers inform her work.
"We have to create an art for liberation and for life."
